About Sutherland House

Sutherland House is located in the centre of Southwold and is one of the town's most important and historic buildings. It provides a comfortable base of great character, with excellent cuisine for its guests.

All the non-smoking rooms are en-suite and have a hair dryer, flat screen TV, ISDN line and telephone. Wi-Fi Internet access is provided with tea and coffee making facilities, and a mini-bar.

Sutherland House dates back to 1455, however it offers modern comfort and features, and has been sympathetically made into a boutique guest house by its owners whilst keeping its important two star listed status.

The fish restaurant, which is a major part of the establishment, has been awarded two AA stars, and the menus show that the owners take great pride in sourcing food locally, and in season, growing many of the vegetables themselves.

Southwold Lighthouse is a great family attraction.

Positive Reviews

Popular Eating.

Sutherland House is a deservedly popular restaurant, with rooms attached, rather than a hotel. The rooms are of varying size, and are all of great character, with historical associations. The nature of the building and stairways means that it is not a comfortable place for those with mobility problems to stay.

Top Class Cuisine.

Generally comments from diners and guests were highly complimentary about the standard of cuisine and service. The breakfasts received a great deal of praise, and the fish dishes on offer were almost invariably found to be excellent. Customers with special dietary needs can be confident of being accommodated here.

Comfort and Character.

The rooms are comfortable, with beds in which a good night's sleep was to be had. Most rooms have been recently updated and renovated, and the provision of complimentary items is well appreciated. Southwold is perceived as being an expensive place in which to stay, however this establishment was felt to offer good value.

Negative Reviews

Sometimes Rushed.

There were some occasions when it was felt that the service let the place down, notably when guests were hurried out of the restaurant as they wished to close. Guests comment that some retraining of staff would seem to be needed.

Ask for Attention.

Guests in summer who found a winter weight duvet on their bed were not comfortable, however if they had contacted the management they would have found that a lighter cover was available.

Pressure of Popularity.

All in all the restaurant attracts a full house most of the time, and it would seem that sometimes the customers suffer because of its popularity. The old and creaking floors in the accommodation area are all part of the charm and atmosphere of the place, however in the dining rooms pressure of numbers should not be allowed to reduce their enjoyment or pressurise the clientèle.
