About Southern Cross Guest House & Tea Rooms

Southern Cross Guest House & Tea Rooms is a 18th century thatched cottage offering bed and breakfast accommodation. It is located in the village of Newton Poppleford, in south east Devon and a 10 minute drive from Sidmouth.

Character cottage style rooms include colour television and tea and coffee facilities. A hairdryer and iron/board are also available. Most rooms are en-suite with just 2 sharing bathroom facilities.

Free parking is also available and there is an attractive walled garden in which to relax.

A substantial cooked breakfast is served in the traditionally themed tea room or, weather permitting, in the garden. There are options here for later tea, cakes and snacks and the neighbouring Cannon Inn provides an impressive dining menu.

Sidmouth and the accompanying glorious World Heritage Coast are just a few minutes’ car journey and only 3 miles from Southern Cross Guest House & Tea Rooms.

Positive Reviews

Comfortable rooms.

Clean and comfortable; some, but not all, rooms are on the compact side, but that’s part of the charm! It’s a Grade II listed building when all said + done. They’re well equipped and clean so no problems here.

A touch of character.

Rooms can have low beams and uneven floors which, again, make the place individual and memorable.

Free onsite car park.

A bonus anywhere and a real plus here.

Negative Reviews

A bit tired.

OK. They want to keep things ‘in character, but you can do this without letting it go to pot. Also, there’s a damp and musty smell throughout, which can’t be good.

No way is East Devon 'sleepy'.

The main road is really busy and noisy. If you are in a room facing the road and you are a light sleeper, boy! ... Have you got problems?

A mean breakfast.

Not ‘mean’ ... just mean! Small portions and not inspiringly brilliant. Maybe they want you to invest in later cream teas etc; in the tea rooms where, hopefully, portions will be more generous.
