About Victoria

Victoria is a hotel in Newport, Gwent in South Wales, not to be confused with other towns of the same name. It is centrally located and within easy access of the M4 Motorway.

The rooms are equipped with tea and coffee making facilities, and are clean and comfortable. There are 26 rooms in total, of which 16 have en suite facilities.

Just a short walk from the main line railway station, the location of the Victoria ensures it is a good place for travellers and for fans attending matches in Newport and at the nearby Cardiff Millennium Stadium. Additionally, there is a multitude of shops in the immediate area. The hotel is an ideal budget location for those who need accommodation while working locally.

The hotel has a selection of take-away items available, and there are a number of pubs and cafés nearby.

Newport has one of the few “transporter” bridges in the world and the Victoria hotel is just eight minutes' walk to the city centre.

Positive Reviews

Cleaned Well

The hotel is kept clean, and the rooms are have clean bedding. The shower and the kettle provided in the guests' rooms worked well. Fans who had attended a match commented that the room was warm and just what they wanted, although the TV was not working, and the hotel was convenient for the station.

Friendly

The staff are friendly and welcoming when you check in, and they go out of their way to be helpful.

Budget Price

This is a beautiful high building with high ceilings. Very much a budget price hotel.

Negative Reviews

Some Dilapidations

The heating was not working, when the receptionist fiddled with it, saying that it would come on now, it still did not work. The television did not work and one of the rooms was bare, with no bedside cabinet, no furniture except for a dilapidated wardrobe.

Absence of Staff

The reception is only manned intermittently: there is a sign on the door with instructions to ring a mobile number for access. Guests who were leaving at 9 am were told, the night before, to leave quietly out of the back, and post the key through the letter box! A guest found that their room, and the corridors smelled of cigarette smoke. The staircase is narrow and steep. A guest found the breakfast choice to be “dreadful, though served with a joke”.

Updating Needs To Continue

The hotel is in need of further investment and will undoubtedly benefit when renovations are completed. Not all rooms are fully equipped, and at present there are televisions in some rooms that do not work, and showers that are unreliable, lack of furniture, mirrors and light fittings that need attention. The location is not quiet, and guests reported being disturbed by loud altercations occurring outside the hotel, and loud music from downstairs. This is not a hotel for a quiet, romantic stay, but is very cheap if that is a priority.
