Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport serves India's biggest city of Kolkata and is named after one of the leaders of the Indian Independence Movement who is believed to have died in 1945. It was previously known as 'Dum Dum' airport because it's located in the Dum Dum district.
The airport is located at a distance of 20 km from the city centre and serves both domestic and international routes. International carriers include European airlines such as British Airways and KLM, Far Eastern airlines such as Singapore Airlines, Thai, Biman and Royal Brunei Airlines as well as Middle Eastern carriers including Royal Jordanian.
The airport has three terminals covering domestic, international and cargo traffic and a fourth is under construction. Passenger numbers have increased so much that a second airport for Kolkata is under consideration.
