Fuerteventura – the colours of Africa with the culture of Spain

Fuerteventura is the oldest of the volcanic Canary Islands. Part of the Kingdom of Spain, despite the fact it is located only 100 kilometres off the coast of western Africa, Fuerteventura has a wonderful climate all year round with approximately 3,000 sunshine hours. It has white sandy beaches, thanks partly to the sand which blows across from the Sahara Desert in mainland Africa, and its strong winds and waves make Fuerteventura a popular choice with visitors who enjoy water sports. Interestingly, Fuerteventura has more goats than it does people, so it will come as no surprise to know that goat meat is an important part of the local diet. You are likely to find goat’s meat cooked in a traditional stew or roasted. Goat’s milk is also used to make a cheese called Majorero.

Museums for all interests

Wherever your hotel in Fuerteventura you are bound to find something of interest nearby. Art lovers should pay a visit to the Centro de Arte Canario in La Oliva. The galleries and sculpture garden here are dedicated to showing the work of Canarian artists which you are likely not to find highly featured in other galleries. In Betancuria, the small Museo Arqueológico de Betancuria focuses primarily on the history of the Guanche tribes who are indigenous to the area. However, the Museo Arqueológico de Betancuria also has Roman artefacts on display too. If art or archaeology are not for you, you could try the Museo del Queso Majorero in Antigua. This interactive museum offers information about how the local Majorero cheese is made, as well as information about the natural fauna and flora of the island which helps give the cheese its distinctive flavour. At the same location, there is also a cacti garden, along with a restored windmill which you can go inside and explore.

Enjoy nature in Fuerteventura

Fuerteventura is home to many protected species of plants and animals. If you want to explore an area that is rich in wildlife, you can pay a visit to the Corralejo Natural Reserve. This area of natural beauty includes a 10-kilometre long stretch of sand dunes which run all the way from La Salina to Puerto Remedios. The Tindaya mountain, which is located close to La Oliva, rises from the flat landscape up to a height of around 400 metres. Considered to be sacred by the original inhabitants of the island, visitors to Fuerteventura can now walk along a trail on the south west of Tindaya and explore the area safely. For a chance to enjoy the marine life, visitors to the island can go snorkelling at La Concha beach in El Cotillo. This sheltered, crescent-shaped bay is home to many species of fish, and can be swum in more comfortably than in the sea around other parts of the island. Another popular spot with tourists is Aguas Verdes in Betancuria, which is a six-kilometre long stretch of rock pools. Fuerteventura promotes sustainable tourism so if you want to stay close to nature you will find a good choice of hotels and other types of accommodation located in rural areas.

Visit the capital

Puerto del Rosario, the capital of Fuertenventura, is not a large town but it does offer things to do if you would like a change from your resort location. At the outdoor sculpture park, after following a path which meanders through a garden, visitors can view more than 100 sculptures by local artists. Even if you have been to the outdoor sculpture park before, it is still worth a visit as the sculptures change from year to year. There are two market days in Puerto del Rosario: an indoor farmers market and outdoor art and flower market on a Saturday, and a second-hand flea market on a Sunday. If you prefer your retail therapy in air-conditioned comfort, visit the Las Rotondas shopping centre. Over several floors there is a good choice of shops including high street names, a supermarket, a children’s play area and places to eat. If you choose a hotel in Puerto del Rosario you will still get great access to beaches but you will also have a wide range of cafes, bars and restaurants to choose from.
