Hotel Heliomar Palmeras (Puerto Rico, Spain)

No-frills rooms were described as basic, but guests found them to be spacious and spotlessly clean. Housekeeping came several times a week for a towel and linen change, and everything else was maintained to a high standard.

Guests were thrilled that they were able to avoid the morning sun bed rush. There was always plenty of space around the pool, and without the crowds, guests were able to enjoy a relaxing and low-key pool vibe.

Perhaps Heliomar's biggest asset is their staff. Guests loved the customer service that they received, and positive attitudes could be found throughout the hotel, from the reception desk to the snack bar.

Gran Canaria is known for its hills, and a steep climb to shops and restaurants is no exception at Heliomar. Guests counted over 60 steps to local businesses, including nightlife, which some said was a problem returning from at night. This probably isn't the best choice for mobility impaired guests or those with small children.

Upon arrival, some guests were discouraged at best to discover that air-conditioning wasn't going to be a part of their vacation. Fans are available for rent, but in the height of summer, and after a strenuous climb to rooms, more than a few guests were left huffing and puffing.

Security is generally a good thing, but a few guests were inconvenienced by the procedure to get back to their rooms in the evening. Late-night guests had to wait to be buzzed in, which isn't ideal when all you want is to go to bed.
