Positive Reviews

Authentic English pub atmosphere

A couple of guests comment that while it isn't exactly the Savoy, that really is the point. They describe the atmosphere at the George and Dragon as that of an authentic English pub. Sometimes that means it may be a bit rowdy, at others a little too earthy, but at no time fake or pretentious. They found this very refreshing.

Good size portions in the restaurant

While reviews of the restaurant are a bit mixed, the majority seem to give it high marks, especially with respect to portion size. This is not a gastro-pub with tiny portions of unpronounceable food, but a regular pub that offers hearty and old-fashioned fare.

Lots of parking out the back

It seems that most guests arrive by car, either to attend events or meetings in Birmingham, or just before flying off on their holidays. They are very grateful for the extensive parking lot the pub has at the back.

Negative Reviews

Rooms in need of some maintenance

This is perhaps the most commonly expressed negative sentiment. Many guests point out that their room had a number of small issues that would be relatively easy for a handyman to fix. The fact that they had not been fixed did not impress.

Strange smells on the ground floor

This is another very common complaint. Most guests describe the smell as “fishy” or ‘oily”, and speculate that it is the result of ineffective extractor fans in the kitchen. In any event, they regard the smell as unpleasant and intrusive.

Ongoing noise till late

It would be surprising if this were not an issue. The rooms are part of a pub, and of course pubs can get rowdy. Several guests were kept awake by the noise when trying to sleep.
